    Orca Bay Mystery Quilt

    Clue #2

Our assignment this past week was to make 72 little paper pieced squares measuring 3 1/2 inches.

I still have absolutely no idea what this quilt is going to look like.  I’m blindly following our instructor Bonnie Hunter.   One thing I do know is that she is “Queen of Scrappy Quilts!”

I started out paper piecing these little squares and felt it was taking way to long so I figured out another way to make them faster.

First I sewed 15 – 20 of my blue and blue-green strips together.

Then using my 3 1/2 inch ruler I cut strips at a 45 degree angle.

Then I made another cut squaring them up into perfect little 3 1/2 in squares!

In no time I had my 72 little squares all done.

Now I’m ready for the next clue which we won’t get until this Friday!

This past Saturday Queena, Ethan, Dorie and James stopped in before heading down to Virginia.   They also wanted to say goodbye to Ethan’s brother Jesse who was in Delaware for Thanksgiving week.   I nabbed a great photo of them before they headed out the door.

Today was a huge day for me.   I helped Queena K. and Connie B. at our church with a BIG painting job.   Our sewing circle had a new sewing table built along with redoing a long counter top.   We figured it was time to do some much needed painting of our sewing drawers and cabinets.

They all had to be sanded down before we could start painting.   I ran the sander till noon and till I thought my arms would fall off!  We worked from 8:00 till 4:30 this evening.  A second coat of paint is needed on part of it.    Queena K. and Connie B. will finish it up tomorrow.     I’m heading up to Lancaster with Mark for a Birthday excursion.   I sorta feel bad for leaving them to finish it but I guess not bad enough.

  • What fun that mystery quilt must be! Your colors are very nice.
Such a nice photo of Queena and her family, Ethan’s brother looks much like Ethan. You have been very busy!!

  • Of course a birthday trip is a wonderful excuse to miss a 2nd day if working.  You certainly did your part.

  • Keep us posted on the mystery quilt. It looks very interesting. I have thought about doing something like that, but I have a hard enough time deciding on colors and fabrics when I know what I am making!

  • I am enjoying watching you make this mystery quilt!  Enjoy your weekend!

  • I love a good mystery myself and am anxious to see the mystery quilt!

  • what a great idea to do the strips like that!!! I am already into the other way with little pieces of paper! Thanks for sharing!

  • Your easy method of making the 3.5″ squares with strips looks like the way to go. I think I’ll try it when I get that far. I’m still working on the hour glasses. … That certainly is a great picture of Ethan & Queena and family. … And please do, go ahead and enjoy your birthday excursion.

  • good thinking!!!

  • How smart you are.  I don’t like making strips very much, I’ll keep your method in mind.

  • Aren’t you the smart one?  I was thinking of joining that mystery quilt thing but when I saw that step, I backed out.  There’s no way I have time to do all that!  Now, I wonder if its too late to start it after all.    Have fun.

  • that’s a great idea! I am sure that sped up the process!
